Just because I can. My characters don't generally breed, you see, so it's a short list.
Who: Lex and Jackie and Ellie
What: Magic-verse
“I don’t know, Mommy.” Ellie looked up from the slowly growing design in front of her. A frown turned the corners of her mouth downwards and a crease appeared between her pale eyebrows. She fiddled with one of the dried noodles, rolling it between her fingers in a nervous gesture. “I don’t know if Daddy will like it.”
Jackie crouched beside her daughter and inspected the macaroni picture for herself. She was pretty sure it was a cat. Maybe a cow. She prayed Lex would know and figured that, even if he didn’t, he would be able to field the question with the instinctive skill he had shown as a father. She smiled to herself and reached out to find a new piece of macaroni, one thickly coated with glitter. Then she offered it to Ellie. “Why do you say that, peanut?”
“Because... Because it’s kinda silly and I don’t know if it’s...” She trailed off in a huff and turned back to the picture. “I just wanna make him something pretty ‘cause he’s the best daddy in the world.”
“I am?”
Mother and daughter spun at the soft, disbelieving question and it was all Jackie could do to avoid laughing at the wide-eyed look on her husband’s face. Ellie flushed strawberry-pink. “Daddy!” she squeaked. “Don’t be sneaky! It’s not nice!” Springing up from her little craft table, she raced across the room with her little fists held high. The way the frown had dissolved into a sunny smile, though, proved the lie of her anger and Lex neatly caught her in mid-leap and swung her around in a circle. The surprise had left his face and he laughed as he brought her up and close into a cuddle. Ellie huffed but still tucked her head beneath his chin. “Daddy,” she muttered.
“I’m sorry, Ellie-bug.” He kissed the top of her head, over the soft blond curls. “I didn’t mean to ruin a surprise. Should I cover my eyes and walk backwards out of the room? Keep in mind that I’ll probably trip on one of your toys and fall on my butt.”
“Or one of your own toys,” whispered Jackie with an evil smile. Lex shot her a wry glance and made a silent shushing motion with his lips.
Ellie heaved a long-suffering sigh and he returned his attention to her obediently. “I just wanted to make you a pretty picture,” she murmured into his chest. “Mommy was helping.”
“That was nice of her.” Lex adjusted his hold to better cradle the light weight of his daughter in his arms. “Can I see or do you have to finish it?”
“I dunno.” Ellie twisted to look over her shoulder. “Mommy, do you think it’s pretty enough?”
Jackie smiled. “I think it’s perfect.”
“... Okay.” Unwinding one hand from around her father’s neck, Ellie pointed imperiously back to her craft table. “There it is, Daddy. Happy Father’s Day! I love you!”
As Lex obediently brought his daughter to the table and bent to investigate his present with a smile, Jackie moved out of the way and watched, her own mouth smiling and fond. This, she thought, from a man who swore he would be the world’s worst father. Her Lexington... What an idiot.
