Blanket around her shoulders, Toffee stared out at the rising moon as she stood by the window of her room and smiled to herself. She felt the look was most probably silly but that somehow did not matter. She was happy. She would smile if she wanted to smile. In fact, she could do anything she wanted now. She was free and clear from all curses and rules and boundaries. He had done that for her. It was a strange feeling to know that, even as the moon rose high and full in the dark, star-speckled sky, she could stay exactly where she was. There was no need to seek the cave or some other silent, isolated spot. No itch touched her feet or strings pulled at her center. She could stand there, at her window, and just enjoy the cool night breeze for a reason that had nothing to do with strenuous activity and overheating limbs. She could count the stars if she wished and not be reminded of three-four time.
Somehow, though, this all just made her want to dance more. The compulsion lifted, the dance could mean anything she wished and, at the moment, such joy bubbled deep within that the restlessness translated into movement. With a giggle, she tossed her blanket towards her bed and turned a neat pirouette. Her nightdress moved with the gesture and she felt the soft cotton brushing bare legs. A tingle slid up her spine. Turning to the window once more, she bowed lowly to the moon and stars. "And now," she announced softly, "for your pleasure... No, for my pleasure, I will execute..." She interrupted herself with laughter, arms going about her torso for a quick hug. "A pas de deux for one." Her amusement set her balance askew but Toffee gamely arranged herself in first position before sliding a foot outwards and rocking her weight forward on it. The rest of her body flowed with the movement and she brought her arms up in a graceful follow-through.
The dance felt different this time and she immediately knew why as she let her own soft, absent hum direct the tempo of her steps. Now she had control back in her hands and could decide the next motion, the next moment. The execution belonged entirely to her and it was both freeing and frightening. She increased the volume of her hum and the speed, feet moving in faster steps to match the memories of her heart from earlier in the day. When he had touched her hand and she had met his golden eyes, the story spilled out between them - all of it in vivid detail, colored by her emotions. Then, softly, he offered to break the curse at no cost. Of course, she did not have to marry him. The witch had not said that, right? Her father had. If she wanted freedom, true freedom, he would give it to her.
In one mad, blunt moment, she had chosen the challenge - tell the truth and only the truth and the one who fumbles first declares forfeit. The questions came innocent at first as she managed to stifle the part of her she could never control and each one answered in perfect honesty.
Then she asked, "Would you still have offered to free me if it meant you had to marry me?"
He had said, "Yes, without a doubt." No hesitation or balking.
Heart in her throat, she had waited for his return question. When it finally came, she lied as hard as she could despite every inch of her straining for the truth. Would dancing forever be better than marrying me? Yes. It took a moment for him to process things and then she was in his arms and things were more than perfect. Her sisters had been right and, some day, she would have to tell them. Not today, though.
"Aren't you tired of dancing?"
The familiar voice from her doorway turned Toffee in a slow spin and she beamed brightly at the intruder. Extending a hand, she invited him into the room. "I'm tired of dancing alone," she answered. "Will you join me?"
Willey grinned. "Forever and ever, Toffee. I promised, didn't I?" He obeyed her summons, coming into the room to take her hand. "Now... Do I get to lead?"
She laughed and moved into the appropriate mirroring pose. "I suppose this once," she teased. He tugged her closer and she settled her head onto his shoulder. "Today... Today is the best day, Willey," she whispered.
"Mmhm but I bet tomorrow's gonna be even better." He brushed a kiss over her hair. "Hum that song again?" he asked. As she complied, he began moving and she gave over to his direction with total happiness. He was very right, she thought. Perfectly right.
